In 2026, EMBO elected a total of 71 distinguished scientists from 23 countries in recognition of their outstanding research achievements and contributions to the advancement of the life sciences. Of the newly elected scientists, 60 were selected as EMBO Members, while 11 researchers working in countries outside Europe were elected as EMBO Associate Members.
Prof. Somel is one of only two scientists from Türkiye elected to EMBO in 2026. With this new election, the total number of scientists from Türkiye who have been recognized as EMBO Members has increased to nine. This achievement represents an important contribution to the international visibility of scientific research conducted in Türkiye and reflects the growing impact of researchers working in the country on the global life-sciences community.
EMBO Membership is awarded in recognition of research excellence, scientific leadership, and sustained contributions to the life sciences. Membership is for life and brings together leading researchers from across Europe and around the world, creating an international network that supports scientific collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the development of future generations of researchers.
EMBO Members play an active role in shaping the organization’s scientific activities and strategic priorities. They may serve on the EMBO Council, scientific committees, advisory boards, and evaluation panels. Members also contribute to the assessment of research funding applications, fellowships, and scientific programs, helping EMBO identify and support high-quality research and emerging scientific talent.
Beyond recognizing individual scientific achievement, EMBO Membership provides opportunities for researchers to contribute to discussions on the future of the life sciences, research policy, scientific integrity, and international cooperation. Through its programs, EMBO supports researchers at different career stages, promotes mobility and collaboration, and encourages the exchange of ideas across institutions, disciplines, and national borders.
The newly elected members will be formally welcomed during the EMBO Members’ Meeting, which will be held in Heidelberg, Germany, from 30 September to 2 October 2026. The meeting will bring together members of the international life-sciences community to discuss current scientific developments, establish new collaborations, and contribute to the future activities of the organization.
Prof. Somel’s election to EMBO constitutes a significant recognition of scientific excellence and further strengthens METU’s representation within one of the world’s leading communities in molecular biology and the life sciences.
