Middle East Technical University (METU) has been ranked the top university in our country in the QS 2025 World University Rankings by Subject, conducted by the UK-based prestigious ranking organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). METU secured the sole first place in 7 subjects among Turkish universities, and it has been recognized as the top university in our country across a total of 12 subjects and 2 broad subject areas. Furthermore, METU ranked 8th in one subject, placed in the top 100 in two subjects, the top 200 in nine subjects, the top 300 in 19 subjects, and the top 400 in 22 subjects.
In the QS 2025 World University Rankings by Subject, a total of 5,203 institutions were evaluated, with 1,747 higher education institutions ranked across 55 subjects under five broad subject areas. According to the published results, METU was ranked in four of the five broad subject areas in which it is active, as well as 23 specific disciplines.
Compared to the rankings of the previous year, METU retained its position in 12 subjects while improving its ranking in all four broad subject areas and seven individual subjects.
The QS Rankings by Subject take into account various indicators, each with a different weight in the total score for a subject. These indicators include Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations, H-Index, and International Research Network. Academic Reputation reflects institutions that demonstrate academic excellence, based on insights from scholars worldwide. Their collective expertise highlights universities’ research quality, strategic partnerships, innovation, and broader impact on education and society.
Employer Reputation focuses on alumni employability on a global scale. As the only ranking system that prioritizes employability, the QS Rankings by Subject emphasize this key aspect of higher education, recognizing that an institution’s standing among employers plays a crucial role in shaping career success after graduation. Citations measure research impact and quality, with citations from specialized journals weighted twice as much in the rankings by subject. H-Index assesses a researcher’s academic productivity and influence by considering their most-cited publications and the total number of citations these works have received. International Research Network tracks global engagement by analyzing international collaborations and co-authored publications. Utilizing the widely recognized Margalef Index, commonly used in Environmental Sciences, this indicator evaluates both the diversity and scope of research partnerships and an institution’s effectiveness in building global networks.
