The 2021 version of the “ranking of researchers with the greatest scientific impact in the world,” which was prepared by the Stanford University researchers, has been published by Elsevier BV. The World’s Most Influential Scientists list is prepared in two categories as career-long and single-year impact (studies conducted in 2020). Scientists who are in the top 2% in 22 different scientific fields and 176 sub-fields are included in the list.

While creating the list, in order to evaluate the academic performance; internationally recognized criteria such as the number of qualified publications, the impact value of the journals in which these publications are published, the number of patents, the number of citations, h-index, hm-index, the number of articles, the number of cited articles, and the impact value of the journals in which these citing articles are published are used.

In the career-long impact category, which was created by assessing the studies of scientists throughout their careers, 828 researchers from Turkey, 39 of whom are from METU, were listed among 186,177 scientists. In the single-year impact category, which was prepared by taking into account the studies of scientists conducted in the year 2020 only, 190,063 scientists were listed worldwide. 1,150 of the listed researchers are from Turkey, including 35 academics from METU.

According to the career-long impact list, Prof. Mustafa Verşan Kök, Prof. Erik Jeppesen, Prof. Saim Özkar, and Prof. Erdin Bozkurt ranked in the top 50,000. In addition, one METU academic ranked in the range of 50,001-100,000, nineteen ranked in the range of 100,001-200,000, and eight ranked in the range of 200,001-300,000, which means a total of 32 academics from METU made it to the first 300,000 in the list.
