Prof. Elif Uysal Elevated to IEEE Fellow

Prof. Elif Uysal has been elevated to IEEE Fellow by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Board of Directors for “pioneering contributions to energy-efficient and low-latency communications”.

Our distinguished faculty member at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Prof. Elif Uysal has been elevated to IEEE Fellow by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Board of Directors for “pioneering contributions to energy-efficient and low-latency communications”. The fellow degree is a recognition of Dr. Uysal as a prominent researcher who advanced the communications discipline and made lasting impact.

Dr. Uysal introduced the concept “energy-efficient packet scheduling” in her early work published in 2001-2004, which spurred a new research area. Her formulation and methods have among the theoretical foundations of the emerging machine-type communication systems such as the Internet of Things and cyberphysical systems, and have been applied to the optimization of energy harvesting communication systems. In the 2010s, Dr. Uysal made original contributions to the communication of energy-limited or energy harvesting sensors. Starting 2015, Dr. Uysal developed fundamental principles for the control of Age of Information in communication networks. In particular, she has developed mechanisms for timely sampling and transmission of information updates without causing network congestion. With this, she has been among the researchers laying the foundations of semantic communication systems.

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for distinguished IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed convenient for this prestigious grade elevation.
