Zero Waste Unit, established in 2019 within the METU Directorate of Administrative and Financial Affairs, started to work on the establishment of the Zero Waste Management System and placed waste collection bins at various points of the campus.
METU Zero Waste Unit distributed triple sets containing bins for “paper waste”, “glass, metal, plastic and packaging waste” and “domestic waste” on 574 floors in 194 buildings, as well as bins to collect organic wastes on 300 floors in 182 buildings on the METU campus. In addition, 300 collection bins were placed across the campus for Covid-19 material wastes, such as masks and gloves on April 13-14. The unit will continue its operations by placing 210 containers at various points determined throughout the campus for segregated waste collection.
It is aimed to reach the highest level of benefits at the lowest cost in the processes of reducing waste, collecting them separately at the source, temporary storage, collecting, transporting and processing, starting from the prevention of waste formation at the university, by using the Zero Waste Management System. METU targets to obtain the Basic Zero Waste Certificate by completing the installation of the Zero Waste Management System until 31 December 2020.
