TÜBA and TÜBİTAK awards announced

Assoc. Prof. Erkan Er has received the TÜBA GEBİP award, and Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Acar has been honored under the TÜBİTAK Science, Special, Service, and Incentive Awards.

Assoc. Prof. Erkan Er from the Faculty of Education and Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Acar from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at METU have been recognized with prestigious awards. Dr. Er received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award (GEBİP) presented by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA), while Dr. Acar has been honored under the TÜBİTAK Science, Special, Service, and Incentive Awards. Both awards were presented during the joint TÜBA and TÜBİTAK Science Awards Ceremony held on December 18, 2024.

Assoc. Prof. Erkan Er, a faculty member in the Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology at the Faculty of Education, has been selected as one of the 25 recipients of the Outstanding Young Scientist Award presented by the Turkish Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Er conducts interdisciplinary research that integrates theoretical foundations in educational sciences with method from computer science. Carrying out projects on utilizing data science and machine learning techniques to design effective interventions in education, he has made significant contributions to this field through his publications. His research, supported by the TÜBA GEBİP award, will explore how generative AI can be trained based on learning theories to provide effective feedback to students and examine the effects of AI-generated feedback on learning. As part of this project, Dr. Er aims to develop various AI tools applicable to different areas of education and demonstrate their effectiveness through scientific experiments.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Acar from the Department of Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences has been recognized under the 2024 TÜBİTAK Science, Special, Service, and Incentive Awards.

Dr. Acar has been awarded the TÜBITAK Incentive Award in the field of Basic Sciences for his outstanding international studies on the development of cellular barcoding technology, tumor organoid biobank and digital pathology platforms in the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program.

About the TÜBA GEBİP Awards

The TÜBA GEBİP awards have been annually presented since 2001 in order to encourage outstanding young scientists working in the fields of engineering, social sciences, medical sciences and life sciences to continue their scientific studies in our country. The program aims to support such researchers in forming their own working groups and carrying out high-quality projects at the international level, as well as rewarding their publications. As part of this unique and prestigious program, award winners receive financial support of 125,000 TL per year for three years.

About TÜBİTAK Awards

TÜBİTAK Science, Special, Service and Incentive Awards are given every year to promote research and development activities in scientific and technological fields and to provide opportunities for the training and development of scientists and researchers.

The TÜBİTAK Incentive Award is granted to scientists residing in our country who have proven their potential to make significant contributions to science at an international level in the future. To be eligible for the award, recipients must be under the age of 40 as of the first day of the award year.
