Team of Turkey, led by Prof. Tolga Can from the Department of Computer Engineering, won one silver and two bronze medals at the 33rd International Olympiad in Informatics.
Cengiz Eray Aslan, Ege Kabasakaloğlu, Olcay Oransoy, and Yusuf Onur Üşümez, who participated in the online competition hosted by Singapore between June 19-25, 2021, were selected to represent Turkey in the computer branch, in the regional and international arena within the scope of TÜBİTAK 2202 Science Olympics. Ege Kabasakaloğlu won a silver medal, Olcay Oransoy and Yusuf Onur Üşümez won two bronze medals in the Olympiad, in which 351 high school students from 88 countries participated this year.
The International Olympiad in Informatics is one of several international science Olympiads held annually around the world. Exceptional high school students from various countries compete in the prestigious algorithmic competition to sharpen their informatics skills—such as problem analysis, design of algorithms and data structures, programming, and testing. In the Olympiad, every team is formed with a maximum of four competitors to represent each participating country, accompanied by the team leader and deputy leader. Each contestant competes individually to maximize their score by solving three algorithmic problems within five hours in the two-day competition. Students, who are graded out of 100 points in each of the categories in the competition, are ranked according to their final scores. The number of medals varies each year depending on the number of official participants. 1/12 of the participants receive gold medals, 2/12 of the participants receive silver medals, and 3/12 of the participants receive bronze medals.
The main objectives of the International Olympiad in Informatics are to discover, encourage, challenge, and recognize exceptional high school students for their talent in the field of informatics; to foster friendly international relationships among computer scientists and informatics educators; to bring the discipline of informatics to the attention of young people; to promote the organization of informatics competitions for high school students; to encourage countries to host future IOI competitions.
